Nursing Continuing Education Requirements
For Relicensure
Nursing Practice/CE Requirements Annually

        Full-Time=  5 contact hours
        Part-Time=10 contact hours
        Unemployed/Inactive= 15 contact hours
        Reinstatement=15 contact hours/year
        Endorsement/Initial licensure=none the year of licensure

Full-Time Nursing Practice

Full-Time nursing practice is a minimum of 1600 hours annunally, or meeting equivalency requirements set forth by the employer.
Home health, contract, self-employed or agency nurses, a minimum of 1600 hours annually (exclusive of travel), is recognized as full-time. Paycheck stubs along with a work log record is sufficient for documenting these nursing practice hours.

Part-Time Nursing Practice

Part-time nursing practice is a minimum of 160 hours but less than full-time employment annually.

Nursing Continuing Education

Continuing education (C.E.) is a planned educational activity designed to update the knowledge and skills of its participants beyond the entry level, or to prepare for practice in a different area of nursing.

Contact Hours

A contact hour is not the same as a CEU (Continuing Education Unit). A contact hour is 50 minutes of participation in an educational activity, which meets LSBN criteria. The conversion is:
1 CEU = 10 contact hours
If a C.E. certificate awards CEUs, the correct conversion into contact hours must also be printed.

Board Approved C.E.

Continuing education contact hours, which have been approved by an LSBN provider, another Board of Nursing, or the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) - Commision on Accreditation, are acceptable for relicensure in Louisiana. If you have any questions please contact the Board's office.
